MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Friday said he has no regrets about the imposition of martial law in the country 40 years ago except that it went on for too long.

A staged ambush against Enrile on Sept. 22, 1972 was among the reasons cited by then President Ferdinand Marcos to impose martial law on Sept. 23, 1972.

"Given the condition at the time, it was right. It was the right decision as far as my personal assessment of it but what made it probably unacceptable was the lengthiness. Either way you can argue. I am not foreclosing the opinions of others," Enrile told ANC's Headstart.

"I am not imposing my opinion and I hope that they will find the book that I've written worthwhile because they will know there are many things that are not known to the public that happened."
