MANILA, Philippines - Online haters beware! Under the new Cybercrime Prevention Act, any act of online libel could earn you a jail sentence of up to 17 years.

Lawyer JJ Disini said the new law punishes online libel even more severely than the Revised Penal Code, which only punishes those guilty of libel of up to 4 years in prison.

Under the new law, online libel has a corresponding penalty of up to 4-12 years jail sentence plus another 4 years for violation of the Revised Penal Code.

Disini said the new law could bring a "chilling effect" to bloggers and other online media.

"I don't think anyone can say that crimes using ICT are far more damaging than crimes using traditional media," he said.
