MANILA - The Department of Education continues to address the problems of teacher and classroom shortage as the new schoolyear begins.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Jesus Mateo says the department is in the process of hiring 61,500 new teachers on top of the 33,900 already hired in February.

He adds there is an ongoing construction of 19,000 classrooms in areas where there is overcrowding on top of the 33,000 classrooms constructed last month.

The one-storey school buildings are expected to be completed before the end of June.
