MANILA, Philippines - Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco on Monday again denied a Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) report that a certain Manny Cuevas approached senator-judges to convince them to acquit Chief Justice Renato Corona in the impeachment trial.

Speaking to radio dzMM, Tiangco said Manny Cuevas is not a member of the Iglesia ni Cristo religious group, nor is he the brother of Corona defense lawyer Serafin Cuevas.

"I've known him since 2004 and he is not a member of the INC unless he got converted recently. He is not a brother of Justice Cuevas," he said in an interview.

He criticized the PDI for the report, saying that the newspaper is pushing for Corona's conviction.

He denied that the INC is lobbying for Corona's acquittal, or that INC emissaries approached members of the United Nationalist Alliance. Tiangco is the secretary-general of UNA.

Tiangco said the PDI report puts pressure on senator-judges "so that if they vote for acquittal, they will have to prove that they voted not because of pressure from the INC."

He also dared the PDI to reveal its source.
