Church sex scandals nothing new - priest

MANILA - An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines debunked Thursday rumors that Pope Benedict XVI resigned from his post because of various sex abuse scandals against priests in different countries.

Speaking to ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda, Father Francis Lucas, Executive Secretary of the CBCP's Episcopal Commission on Social Communication and Mass Media, said there is no truth to rumors that the pope was forced to step down due to reports of priests abusing young boys.

"What's new? If you study Church history for 2,000 years, there were times that were more dangerous and the scandals more heinous. The Church was used for evil," Lucas said.

He said the Catholic Church has both a human and a divine side, and that it is the human side that is influenced by evil.

He also dismissed talk that the pope's successor would be the last pope of the Catholic Church and that he will bring about the end of the world.

Lucas admitted Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has a strong chance of being elected pope but said he does not want the Philippines to lose a good priest.
