MANILA – Puerto Princesa Mayor and senatorial bet Edward Hagedorn believes the United Nationalist Alliance has a communication problem after news came out that he and 2 other candidates would not be invited to join the UNA slate.

Hagedorn said reports that he, JIL founder Bro. Eddie Villanueva and Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino might be adopted by UNA came from San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, a candidate of UNA and son of former president Joseph Estrada. Estrada is one of the "3 Kings" of UNA.

UNA campaign manager Toby Tiangco later said the coalition will not invite the 3 candidates to join their slate to replace Loren Legarda, Chiz Escudero and Grace Poe.

Hagedorn said he felt the UNA announcement made it appear that he, Villanueva and Casino presented themselves as alternatives for the 3 candidates.

“Ang nakakalungkot lang kasi I think may problema dun sa UNA in terms of communication kasi parang lumalabas na parang kami ang nagpiprisinta ng sarili namin. Itong recent na dinrop nila yung 3 candidates. Hindi ho totoo yan. Kami ang nilalapitan para mag-fill up,” he told ANC’s Headstart.

He added: “Dun sa statement  ni Toby Tiangco at Nancy Binay, sabi nila wala silang intensyon na palitan yung 3. Para tuloy lumalabas na kami yung nagpiprisinta. It’s not true.”

Hagedorn said former president Estrada approached him about joining the slate even before the coalition decided to drop Legarda, Escudero and Poe as guest candidates.

He said he had already made up his mind to continue running as an independent even if UNA changes its mind and invites him to their slate.

“I have already decided to run as an independent for the simple reason to preserve myself as an alternative. It’s an uphill battle but I think we can make it with the support of the people,” he said.

He also said he expects to get support from former president Estrada, whom he considers a good friend.
