MANILA - The executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines on Wednesday said electing a new pope is not like a wrestling match where the strongest candidate wins.

Father Francis Lucas said that unlike regular elections, cardinals cannot campaign for themselves to become the new head of the Catholic Church.

"The election of a new pope is not like other elections. It is not like a UFC championship," he told radio dzMM.

Lucas warned against politicking the process, saying that it is the Holy Spirit that will guide the cardinals to choose the new pope.

He also urged Filipinos to pray for Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle after he was mentioned as a possible "papabile."

"Whatever your face, the color of your skin or your intelligence, as long as you can lead the church...yun ang mahalaga," he said.
