'Dirty ice may expose summer coolers to bacteria'

Along with the hot weather comes the popularity of summer coolers like sago’t gulaman, mais con yelo, and halo-halo. However, a health expert warns of the ice rife with bad bacteria that may cause food poisoning, or worse death.

“Maaari tayong magsuka, [magkaroon ng] pagdudumi or diarrhea at 'pag hindi siya naagapan ay maaring maging dahilan ng kamatayan,” Dr. Marian De Leon, a microbiologist, said.

Unhygienic ice is a breeding ground for noxious bacteria such as Salmonella, E. Coli and Staphylococcus Aureus that may be spread via cross-contamination.

“‘Pag sinabi nating cross-contamination, ito ‘yong pagsalin o paglipat ng mga masasamang mikrobyo mula sa kontaminadong pagkain papunta sa ibang pagkain sa pamamagitan ng hindi malinis na mga kagamitan sa kusina,” De Leon explained.

To help eliminate the bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses, De Leon advised keeping the kitchen clean by using an antibacterial dishwashing liquid soap.

“Para maiwasan natin sila [bacteria], mas magandang panatilihin nating malinis ang ating kusina,” De Leon said.

“Pinakamalaking bagay ‘yong paggamit ng antibacterial soap or dishwashing liquid kasi nakakatulong talaga siya sa pagbaba ng dami ng mikrobyo,” she added.
