Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards recognizes modern-day heroes
Modern-day heroes and Filipinos who make a difference in their communities are being recognized by the Gawad Geny Lopez Jr. Bayaning Pilipino Awards.
Among this year's awardees are 17-year-old Loizza Aquino, founder of youth organization Peace of Mind 204; and Jose Chan, founder of Building Lives for Better Future, which focuses on education.
Aquino described her organization as one that aims to increase the discourse on mental health and erase the stigma associated with it.
With the rising popularity of social media, Aquino said addressing bullying is now more important for the youth.
"I think it's important [that] it's a youth-to-youth thing because I feel that youth don't think that people who are older can relate. We have so many more kind of obstacles in our lives because there's social media now and different types of bullying other than just physical bullying. I think the fact that we are [the] youth makes other people more open to it," she said on ANC.
Chan, meanwhile, started his non-profit group to provide meals, tuition, and school supplies to children in the Philippines, Mexico, and San Diego, California.
He said he hopes that his work with the youth will create a ripple effect so that more people will benefit in the future.
"Reaching out, helping people we have to consider this as investment. We have to make sure our effort will not gonna be a waste so what I do is I look for poor people who deserve help and my help will not be wasted because I will make sure that they will be successful so they will continue what I did to them so it's a ripple effect," he said.
