Why healthy eating may not be enough

Ensuring the safety and health of your children is no easy feat.

Sometimes, fresh home-cooked meals and clean water are simply not enough. Such was the case for Rachelle de Guzman, who was stunned when her three-year-old suffered from diarrhea despite their healthy eating habits.

Dr. Benigno Glenn Ricaforte, president of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc., suspects that de Guzman's daughter might have used improperly cleaned eating utensils.

The World Health Organization estimates that 125,000 children under the age of five die each year because of food-borne diseases. 

According to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, children in this age range are also at a higher risk of catching communicable diseases such as typhoid fever and tuberculosis. More often than not, these diseases are transmitted through improperly cleaned and disinfected utensils.

So, how do you protect your family's health?

Ricaforte suggests using dishwashing liquid with anti-bacterial properties, since children are much more sensitive to bacteria.
