The Philippines remains classified as 'Tier 2' in the US State Department's 2012 report on human trafficking.

'Tier 2' countries are those which do not fully comply with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking, but are making significant efforts toward them.

The US report says Filipino men, women, and children continue to face forced labor, exploitation and prostitution.

It adds overseas Filipino workers who end up as trafficking victims are often subjected to psychological and physical abuse.

But the report also notes the Philippine government has increased funding for anti-trafficking efforts, implemented a new program to rehabilitate victims and negotiated agreements with other nations to protect OFW's.

Among the US State Department's recommendations are to prosecute illegal recruiters, curb corruption, and increase the protection of witnesses. Mornings@ANC, June 20, 2012
