In the lead up to the Japanese occupation of Manila in the early days of 1942, a nervous frenzy took over the city with wounded soldiers making the great escape by sea and a mad scramble for goods at warehouses.

On December 30, there was supposed to be pomp and ceremony in Manila. Instead, it took place outside Malinta tunnel in Corregidor. 

Historian Manolo Quezon joins “[email protected]” and looks back at the dawn of a new year at that point in Philippine history.
