In the face of what he calls a demolition job against him, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile moved to declare the Senate presidency vacant.

But the upper chamber voted 11 to 3, with two abstentions, to reject Enrile's motion.

Absent from today's proceedings were some of Enrile's critics, including Senators Pia and Alan Peter cayetano, and Miriam defensor-santiago.

Enrile raised the motion during a privilege speech this afternoon where he also hit his critics, alleging that they only stirred controversy over the Senate Christmas cash gifts to plot his ouster

Trillanes, who had engaged enrile in a much-publicized verbal tussle last year, had said there was indeed a move to oust Enrile from the Senate presidency.

Earlier, the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption filed an ethics complaint against enrile and all the senators over the cash gift issue.

VACC founding chair Dante Jimenez says their complaint also covers the alleged use of Senate funds for some senators' household expenses. -- ANC, Top Story, January 21, 2013
