MANILA - Domestic retail sales of Microsoft’s newest Windows personal computer operating system will begin this week, with discounts available for early adopters.

Windows 7, which was released to the general public worldwide last week, comes less than three years after the debut of the last significant upgrade, Vista, which suffered from poor consumer reception compared to its predecessor, XP.

XP, according to reports, remains the operating system of choice for most PCs worldwide.

Windows 7 is described as an incremental improvement, addressing Vista issues such as slow boot times, reduced usability and software conflicts.

In the Philippines, Microsoft will be offering the Home Basic edition of Windows 7 at a price of P7,777 -- playing on its name -- from now until November 8, after which the charge rises to P8,000.

Other editions such as Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate will be available for prices ranging from P9,500 to P16,500.

"Windows 7 makes the things you do every day easier and faster. It’s easy to connect, easy to browse and simple to use and is designed to make your PC faster, more secure and more reliable," the Microsoft statement read.

It touted the rigorous testing done, saying "More than 2,600 customers participated in user research and usability studies for Windows 7."

"Windows 7 saw the largest beta testing program in the history of the industry, with eight million testers worldwide. People from more than 113 countries downloaded the Windows 7 beta."

The minimum hardware requirements are a one-gigahertz processor, at least one gigabyte of memory, and 16 gigabytes of hard disk space. -- E. N. J. David, BusinessWorld
