MANILA, Philippines – Fight fans have chosen Round 5 of the recent Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight as the best round for the year 2012, according to The RING.
RING editor Doug Fischer reported that the back-and-forth between Pacquiao and Marquez in Round 5 got 30.5% of the fans’ vote on RingTV.com’s year-end awards poll.
The round outpointed the 12th round between Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (26.7%), and the second round of the Tomasz Adamek and Travis Walker fight (25.8%).
“Round five of Pacquiao-Marquez IV featured two future first-ballot hall of famers – each with an entire nation of devoted fans behind him – fighting their hearts out,” said Fischer.
He said that the all-out action in Round 5 swayed voters to choose the frame as "Round of the Year for 2012."
In that round, Pacquiao tagged Marquez with a solid left, forcing the Mexican to touch the canvass for a technical knockdown.
Marquez retaliated with a counter-right cross that buckled the Filipino boxer’s knees.
The Filipino then forced the Mexican to the ropes, but Marquez fired back with counter-punches to escape from the corner.
“Statistically speaking it was rather lopsided in favor of Pacquiao, who landed 26 of 48 of his total punches to Marquez’s 10 of 46, according to CompuBox. He landed 5 of 11 jabs to 3 of 20 and 21 of 37 power shots to 7 of 26,’ said Fischer.
Pacquiao, however, lost the fight in the next round after he was knocked out with a counter-right hand while attacking Marquez.
“As Marquez proved in the following round, it only takes one to win a fight,” said Fischer.
