MANILA, Philippines – Robert Garcia, the coach of four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr., was chosen by Yahoo! Sports as 2012 Trainer of the Year.

Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole said Garcia gets credit for constantly improving his marquee fighters including Donaire, Brandon Rios and his brother Mikey Garcia.

“In boxing, no one did that better in 2012 than Robert Garcia, the Yahoo! Sports Trainer of the Year,” said Iole in his column.

Iole said that with Garcia’s help, Donaire, Rios and Mikey tallied a total of eight wins with five knockouts this year.

Donaire had four victories in 2012, while Rios had two. Mikey also won two fights.

“Robert Garcia's ability to make sure his fighters are always in shape, are using the style that is best suited for their talents and to adjust during fights sets him apart from most other trainers,” said Iole.

Garcia was earlier given a similar recognition by The RING as the Trainer of the Year for 2012.

RingTV announced that 57.4% of fight fans voted for Garcia in their year-end poll.

Virgil Hunter got 19% of the fans’ votes, while the late Emanuel Steward received 18%.
