MANILA – Rain or Shine is one step closer to the PBA Philippine Cup Finals after drubbing San Mig Coffee, 83-74, in Game 4 of their semifinals series at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena on Thursday.
After coming back from an 18-point deficit, the Mixers came close to seizing the lead, 74-77, with just 1:11 minutes remaining in the game, reported the league’s website.
But Chris Tiu scored 6 straight points for the Elasto Painters to quash San Mig’s rally.
The win hiked Rain or Shine’s series lead to 3-1.
Elasto Painters’ coach Yeng Guiao said they plan to go for the jugular when the series resumes on Saturday.
"It's a big win for us, we now have three chances to make the finals. Our plan is to finish it off on Saturday," said Guiao.
Gabe Norwood led Rain or Shine with 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Ryan Arana and Jeffrei Chan combined for 25 points by tallying 12 and 12, respectively.
Tiu, whose final six points warded the Mixers' last hurrah, finished with 10.
They made up for Paul Lee’s scoring woes. From an average of 12.3 points a game, he was held to 2 points.
“That’s just the nature of this team,” said Guiao. “Paul Lee played a horrible game, but there’s always someone on the team ready to cover up.”
James Yap paced San Mig Coffee with 20 points, while PJ Simon and Joe Devance were the only other Mixers who churned out double digits.
Simon finished with 15 and Devance added 14.
