MANILA, Philippines – San Mig main man James Yap was named PBA Player of the Week for the period of December 17-23 after he led the Coffee Mixers to victory against Rain or Shine in Game 2 of their Philippine Cup semi-final match-up.

After being held to only 11 points in San Mig’s Game 1 loss, Yap exploded for 34 points and hauled down 10 rebounds as the Mixers tied the series by winning Game 2, 106-82.

Yap, despite being hobbled a strained right knee and bone spurs on his right ankle, had an efficient night as he made 11 of his 21 field goals, including seven of his 12 attempts from beyond the arc.

"He's been a warrior, having to play through a myriad of injuries and he certainly came up with a big performance when we really needed it," San Mig coach Tim Cone said, adding that Yap lived up to his moniker of "Big Game James."

"He's a remarkable player playing remarkable basketball, and he can make the game so easy at times," Cone added.

Yap, meanwhile, merely said he needed to step up after his subpar performance in Game 1. He also considers it a gift to PBA fans.

"Malapit na ang Pasko, kaya maganda na sigurong gift sa mga supporters ng team at ng PBA," he said.
