MANILA, Philippines – Filipino champion Nonito Donaire paid a courtesy call to President Benigno Aquino III at the Malacañang Palace on Thursday.
The President warmly received the “Filipino Flash” at the Palace’s Music Room.
Donaire successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title against Mexico’s Jorge Arce over the weekend.
Donaire, who is based in California, visited the Philippines to share his victory to his fellow Filipinos.
Aquino earlier said he feels an affinity with the Filipino boxer, who dedicated one of his fights to the Chief Executive’s mother, the late former President Corazon Aquino.
"He had yellow shorts, yellow boots, yellow gloves when my mother was sick. That's when he dedicated the fight. I really feel an affinity with him. I hope he really achieves his dreams," the President said.
