MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos of Brazil criticized former No. 1 contender Alistair Overeem, hinting that the Dutch kickboxer was “made at the laboratory.”
Dos Santos will defend his heavyweight belt against former champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 on December 29, but he still keeps tabs on Overeem, who may regain his status as the No. 1 contender if he defeats Antonio “Big Foot” Silva on February 2013.
In a conference call, Dos Santos managed to criticize Overeem while at the same time commending his upcoming opponent.
“I prefer to fight against clean athletes and real professionals,” Dos Santos said, as quoted by MMA Fighting.
“Cain is one of these guys. He’s a real professional fighter and that’s a good challenge for me. I know he’s very tough and I know how hard I have to train to face him,” he added. “The other guys, they just say things but there’s nothing behind the words.”
“Guys like me and Cain Velasquez, we are made at the gym. And guys like the other guy, they are made at the laboratory.”
Dos Santos is most likely referring to Overeem’s failed drug test earlier this year, which scuttled a fight between the two men. Overeem was suspended for nine months after testing positive for elevated testosterone.
If Dos Santos is successful against Velasquez and Overeem becomes the No. 1 contender anew, the Brazilian said he will have no problem against the former kickboxing champion.
“I don’t choose opponents. Whoever the UFC puts in front of me, I’ll be ready to face,” he said.
