MANILA, Philippines -- Powerade's top gunner Gary David won his third PBA Player of the Week award for the season after elevating his game just in time for the Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
David led the 8th seeded Powerade Tigers to a stunning upset of topseed B-Meg, sending the team to the semi-finals of the Philippine Cup.
He averaged 34.5 points in two games against B-Meg, along with 4.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals.
"People with keen basketball understanding will see how talented he is as a player," Powerade head coach Bo Perasol said of David. "His topnotch performance against B-Meg is one of the major reasons why we are in the semi-finals."
According to PBA.ph, it is the first time since the 2004 Fiesta Conference that Powerade has advanced to the semi-finals. They are waiting for the winner of the best-of-3 series between Ginebra and Rain or Shine.
"Nung makapasok kami sa quarters, ipinangako ko talaga sa sarili ko na gagawin ko ang lahat para manalo kami sa B-Meg," David said.
Few pundits gave the Tigers a chance of upsetting B-Meg, who entered the playoffs on an 8-game winning streak. One analyst even suggested that Powerade had "no chance in hell" of defeating the Llamados, a comment that fired up David.
"Alam kong hindi personal ang comment na iyon, pero parang personal na rin sa akin dahil team ko ang tinukoy," he said.
David scored 32 points in their 97-88 win against B-Meg last Wednesday, helping the Tigers force a deciding 2nd game.
He was even better in the 2nd contest, scoring 37 points, 23 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime to propel Powerade to a 131-123 victory.
