MANILA, Philippines –After helping the Aces claim a huge lead over the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings, Alaska forward Calvin Abueva had some fun at the perennial crowd favorite's expense.
Alaska led by as much as 30 points, and were still comfortably ahead, 99-83, with just one minute and 30 seconds to go in their 2016-17 PBA All-Filipino Cup game on Sunday at the Big Dome. Abueva took it as his cue to celebrate, waving his towel and dancing at the sidelines.
At this point, most of the Ginebra fans were heading for the exits, but some of them still booed the Alaska forward as he continued to wave his towel and laugh.
Alaska went on to secure a 101-86 win. Abueva finished with 12 points, five rebound, and two assists in under 18 minutes of playing time. Afterward, he shrugged off his sideline antics.
"'Di naman pang-asar," he said. "Masama ba sumayaw?"
Asked why he danced as the Aces put the finishing touches on the rout, he said: "Wala, trip ko lang."
The victory over Ginebra was Alaska's third straight of the conference, and "The Beast" was happy to see every player on their team contribute, even the little-used bench players.
"Sa first hanggang third (quarters), binigay na namin lahat para umangat ang lamang namin," he said. "Sa fourth, nakakaawa naman ang iba kung hindi ipasok ni Coach (Alex Compton). Pero maganda naman ang ginawa nila, 'di naman nila pinabayaan ang lamang."
