MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Abner Mares will be rooting for fellow super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. when the “Filipino Flash” clashes against Jorge Arce this weekend.
Mares wants the Filipino boxer to hurdle Arce so that they can fight in the future.
“I’m Nonito’s biggest fan right now,” the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion said in Boxing Scene. “I’m cheering for him.”
Donaire will be defending his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title against Arce at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).
Mares, however, said Arce won’t be easy to beat because of his all-or-nothing fighting style.
“Again, it’s going to be a good fight. I know Arce has pulled a lot of upsets. I hope Nonito wins and I’m sure he’ll win.”
Boxing pundits wanted to see a unification title clash between Donaire and Mares, but the wedge between the fighters’ handlers has prevented the bout from happening.
Donaire fights under Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., which competes with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.
