MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III sent his congratulations to boxer Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, Jr. and the Philippine national football team after getting key victories in their respective battles over the weekend.
“We’d like to congratulate Mr. Donaire again, for winning this bout… So, congratulations Mr. Donaire, Mabuhay ka!” Presidential Deputy Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview.
The Boholano Donaire delivered an astonishing feat by handing Ukrainian Wladimir Sidorenko his first knockout loss last Saturday (Sunday, in Manila).
With the victory, he bagged the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight crown.
The President also applauded the country’s football team after it won a shocking victory in a regional competition on Sunday.
“These victories affirm yet again the Filipino's drive to excel, noting further that the Philippine team's triumph in the Suzuki Cup signifies an enthusiasm to join the community of nations in the international arena of football,” Aquino said.
The Azkals shocked 40,000 Vietnamese fans after humbling their compatriots, 2-0, in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Football Federation Suzuki Cup clash Sunday night.
With their respective conquests, Donaire and the Azkals advance to tougher competition.
Donaire wants World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Council bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel next, while the football team faces Myanmar on Wednesday.
