MANILA – Boxing promoter Bob Arum can't help but admire the success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with its cards outside the US.
Arum said this is the reason he is following the MMA promotion's business model used in countries like Brazil, Canada and China.
"I think the UFC has done a great job and handled it like the business model that it is," he said in an interview with USA Today.
"They realize, I think, more revenue from Brazil than they do from the United States. Brazil is a tremendous market for mixed martial arts, as it can be for boxing. So for a business person not to realize that, he'd have to be out of his mind."
Arum said he is determined to develop boxing’s fan base in China, the world’s most populous country.
Apart from holding fight cards there, including the recent Pacquiao-Rios bout in Macau, Arum said there is a need to produce boxing talents in the region so fight fans will be able to relate to them.
"We are endeavoring to develop boxing talent in China. It's not easy but we'll be able to do it by putting on local shows."
