MANILA -- Top Rank Promotions and ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. formally announced their partnership in airing quality boxing entertainment.
Top Rank chief Bob Arum and ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III formally signed the agreement on Friday.
One of the immediate plans of the partnership is the airing of “Pinoy Power III” in February on ABS-CBN channels.
The Pinoy Power III fight card, scheduled on February 13 in Las Vegas next year, will feature Nonito Donaire Jr., Gerry Peñalosa, and Bernabe Concepcion.
Arum said that they plan to organize monthly shows to be aired by ABS-CBN.
“Plus a whole lot of other boxing that's gonna be really tough fight boxing. There'll be as many as 50 boxing programs a year,” said the Top Rank chief.
He added he hopes the partnership can give exposure to budding Filipino boxers.
“My hope is that we could get a lot of Filipino young fighters so that they can be showcased on Philippine television,” he said.
Arum also said that he is confident that ABS-CBN can showcase the fights well.
“What I hope to come out of this is that boxing can be established even on a bigger plane…I know the people of ABS-CBN have that type of feeling as well, get the product from us and showcase it like nobody else can like this network,” he said.
For his part, ABS-CBN Vice President for Sports Peter Musngi said the network plans to make Top Rank fights the “greatest”.
“This is something that we really wanted… We promise you that whether it’s here in the Philippines or all over the ABS-CBN group of territories your (Top Rank) fights are gonna be the greatest,” said Musngi.
Lopez, meanwhile, said the partnership with Arum and Top Rank could be a start of something big.
“We're very happy with this start,” he said.
