MANILA, Philippines – Strength and conditioning trainer Alex Ariza is disappointed that Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao opted to focus more on the boxing program during his training camp for his fourth fight against rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

In an interview with The Boxing Channel, Ariza sounded frustrated because he feels Pacquiao is not devoting enough time to his strength and conditioning program.

“We’re not focusing on the strength and conditioning program as much as we used to in the past,” Ariza said.

“When I look at what made us successful in the past, and I’m looking at what’s not making us successful, that’s the only common denominator involved,” he pointed out.

Ariza said that when Pacquiao followed his strength and conditioning program, the Filipino boxer turned in dominant performances, including knockout victories over David Diaz and Miguel Cotto.

But he claims that Pacquiao has once again chosen to focus on the boxing program instead of strength and conditioning, which bothers Ariza.

“He’s gonna focus on the boxing and the strategy of the fight. You can only push your agenda for so long, then you have to support what they decide to do,” he said.

The lack of strength and conditioning may also have something to do with the cramps that have plagued Pacquiao in his last couple of fights.

“I think you have to go back and look at the past, the five fights from Diaz to (Joshua) Clottey and to (Antonio) Margarito where we had no problem. What did we do different, why all of a sudden where having cramps again? We’re not doing strength and conditioning,” he said.

Despite this, Ariza acknowledged that Pacquiao has looked good in training camp.

“I think Manny always looks great in camp, he always looks good in camp,” he said. “But what matters is what happens on December 8.”

Pacquiao and Marquez will tangle for the fourth time on December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
