MANILA, Philippines – Azkals coach Michael Weiss said he’d push his team to focus on the semifinals first rather than talk about making a historic title win in the 2012 Suzuki Cup finals.
Weiss said they need to take care of their semifinal assignment first to make sure that they’d reach the tournament finals.
“We will take it match by match,’’ he said in Suzuki Cup’s website. “We have to take the right steps to see how we can get even better.”
After yielding to host team Thailand, 2-1, the Azkals knocked down former titlist Vietnam (1-0) and Myanmar (2-0) to make their second appearance in the tournament semifinals.
The Philippines ended up 2nd in Group A with 6 points on 2 wins and 1 loss.
This means they will play against the Group B winner in a home-and-away series on December 8 and 12.
The leading Group B teams are defending champion Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
Weiss, meanwhile, said that if the Azkals make it to the finals, there is a possibility that they have a rematch against the mighty Thailand War Elephants.
“My feeling is that Thailand are one of the strongest sides. Maybe we will have a chance to play them again [in the finals],’’ he said.
Thailand copped the first semifinals berth in Group A by finishing with 9 points on 3 wins. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
