MANILA, Philippines – “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire said that after his bout with Jorge Arce in December, he’d like to face Mexico’s Abner Mares next.
In a report by RingTV’s Lem Satterfield, Donaire said he has been asking for a fight against Mares, the World Boxing Council (WBC) champion, since last year.
"I requested that fight last year and this year, but it never happened," said Donaire.
He hopes things would change as Mares called him out following the latter’s victory over former champion Anselmo Moreno.
Donaire, the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion, said he wants to begin cleaning up the super bantamweight ranks starting with the Mares fight.
“We'll see. I'll fight Mares, who is the Golden Boy guy as well. We'll have to wait for that negotiation to present itself. But I want that fight in order to begin cleaning out this division and then move up to 126," he said.
Donaire, who fights under Top Rank, was referring to Mares’ contract with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP).
The strained relationship between the two boxing promoters has been an obstacle to the Donaire-Mares fight.
Donaire said he’s also willing to fight Rigondeaux, the World Boxing Association (WBA) champion.
However, he said this can be held after the Mares fight.
“I want to get a good fight in, and people are requesting that Mares fight. So No. 1 is the Mares fight, and No. 2, it's the Rigondeaux fight. But to me, Rigondeaux, just a guy that is out there, holding a belt. So I'm going to take it from him, and go after the bigger fights."
