MANILA, Philippines – Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has thumbed down a compromise offered by rival company Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) on the proposed Nonito Donaire-Abner Mares fight.

GBP CEO Richard Schaefer earlier proposed that they will allow their boxer Mares to face Donaire only if Arum lets Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios collide with Lucas Matthysse.

Arum, however, said this is not the way he operates.

“It's not major league baseball. We don't trade fighters! You trade baseball players, you don't trade fighters. This guy knows nothing about the sport of boxing” Arum told Boxing Scene’s Luis Sandoval.

The veteran promoter said he’ll stick to his earlier proposal that Top Rank handle the promotion of the Donaire-Mares fight.

Arum said he’ll pay GBP for Mares’ services.

Mares, the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion, has called out World Boxing Organization (WBO) titlist Donaire for a unification bout.

However, the intense rivalry between Top Rank and GBP has been an obstacle to the bout.
