MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum is not likely to favor a third fight between Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and 3-time world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, citing the Mexican's lack of marketability.
The Top Rank chief said that although Marquez is an excellent boxer, he said the Mexican champion no longer has good name recall among casual fans.
“He’s a wonderful fighter and a great young man, but the casual fan doesn’t know Juan Manuel Marquez from [World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion] Juan Manuel Lopez,” Arum said in a Yahoo! Sports report.
Arum cited Marquez’s recent bout with Aussie Michael Katsidis as proof of the Mexican’s lack of marketability. Yahoo! Sports reported that only 4,920 people trooped to MGM Grand Garden Arena to watch the fight.
“The casual sports fan just doesn’t know Marquez, as witnessed by the attendance on Saturday (Sunday in Manila, Nov. 28),” he said.
Marquez, who stopped Katsidis via a 9th round technical knockout, has been clamoring for a third fight against Pacquiao.
Pacquiao first fought Marquez in May 2004, and the match ended in a draw despite the Filipino scoring 3 knockdowns against the Mexican.
The two fought again in March 2008, and Pacquiao again knocked down Marquez for a split decision.
The results of both fights were controversial.
Mosley a strong candidate
Meanwhile, “Sugar” Shane Mosley seems to be leading the race of boxers trying to secure a fight against
Arum said Mosley is a very strong candidate because of his name recognition, and, therefore, an easier sell.
“With Mosley, my gut feeling is that promoting that fight right, because of Mosley’s name recognition, will move the needle a lot. That will be a pretty high number,” said Arum.
Arum said the issue being considered in such a deal is the revenue a fight could sell.
“The bottom line, it’s all about the Benjamins,” he said.
Mosley went directly to Arum’s Top Rank Inc., despite being one of the stakeholders of Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), just to arrange a fight against the Filipino.
GBP is a direct competitor of Top Rank.
“If Golden Boy can’t make the fights, then I have to step outside the box as my own promoter and do it,” Mosley said earlier in a report posted in Boxing Scene.com.
Other boxers calling out for Pacquiao are Devon Alexander and Timothy Bradley.
