MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Azkals head coach Michael Weiss warns his squad and their supporters that they are not assured of victory when they take on Myanmar in their last group stage game of the AFF Suzuki Cup on Friday night.
The Azkals revived their hopes of advancing to the semi-finals when they defeated Vietnam, 1-0, last Tuesday, and have a strong chance of clinching the slot against Myanmar.
"If we beat Myanmar, we are through and also have a good chance to go through with one point," Weiss said in an interview with the tournament's official website.
But Weiss stressed that Myanmar should not be taken lightly.
"Nobody can say Myanmar are the weakest team in the group. You saw the game against Vietnam – they played very well and could have won," Weiss said.
Myanmar held Vietnam 1-1 in their first game of the tournament.
"They beat our under-23 team 5-0 last year," Weiss further said. "It would be naive to think – like some dreamers in the Philippines or wherever – that we are already through."
The head coach said he will not allow his players to be overconfident going into Friday's crucial match.
"I will not allow that attitude, definitely. We will have to work very hard," Weiss said.
The Azkals are hoping to duplicate their feat in the 2010 tournament, when they shocked then-holders Vietnam in the group stage and made it all the way to the semi-finals.
