MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxing star Juan Manuel Marquez believes he and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao of the Philippines can be friends outside of the ring even as they are fierce rivals inside of it.
Pacquiao and Marquez will fight for the fourth time on December 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but the Mexican said once the fighting is done, they are respectful of each other.
“It is a professional relationship, and the last three fights we have had were wars, so I know he respects me and I respect him,” Marquez said, as quoted by PhilBoxing.
When asked if he can be friendly with Pacquiao in the future, Marquez said, “Definitely.”
“I will be able to sit down with him and talk and have a friendship with him. Why? Because of the great rivalry we had in the ring,” Marquez said.
“I have nothing against him except the decisions,” he added.
Pacquiao has repeatedly said that he has nothing personal against Marquez, and that he is only “doing his job” inside the ring. The Filipino fighter has also struck a friendship with another one of his opponents, Erik Morales, whom he also had a trilogy with.
Marquez seems willing to let bygones be bygones once they exit the boxing ring.
“I don’t see why we can’t have a personal relationship and not just a professional relationship,” Marquez said.
