MANILA, Philippines – Boxing trainer Freddie Roach suspects that Juan Manuel Marquez’s bulked up physique may have been a product of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs).
What roused the trainer’s suspicions on Marquez’s rapid muscle growth are the Mexican’s ties with Angel “Memo” Hernandez, who reportedly supplied PEDs to former track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery.
"If [his body] is natural, I will kiss his ass,'' Roach told Jon Saraceno of USA Today.
Marquez, who typically campaigns as a lightweight, used to have troubles gaining size as a welterweight.
But when he started working with Hernandez for the third Pacquiao fight, his body began making sizable gains. This has made Marquez a more durable fighter, capable of withstanding most of Pacquiao’s punches.
"[Marquez] has gotten bigger and gained weight — it throws up a red flag,'' Roach said, as he urged both Marquez and Pacquiao to undergo pre-fight drug screening to eliminate suspicion.
Roach said the Filipino boxer has no problems taking the test.
"I said [to Pacquiao], 'You're clean, right? He said, 'Of course.' I said, 'Take the test.' He said OK," said Roach.
However, boxing promoter Bob Arum said asking for a test is not that simple.
"People who talk about this really are naïve. It has to be completely thought out. If someone had to come to me with this, I would have gone to the commission (and asked). Then it's controlled and run by the commission. That's the way to do it," Arum said.
