MANILA, Philippines - The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Tiger Spikers and the De La Salle University Lady Spikers will open their defense of their UAAP volleyball championships this weekend at the Fil Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
On Sunday, the Tiger Spikers begin their quest for a historic five-peat as they take on the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, who finished third in Season 73, while the Lady Archers face off against the Adamson University Lady Falcons, the third-placers in the women's tournament.
The Tiger Spikers will lean on Finals MVP and team captain Jayson Ramos, Season 73 Best Receiver Paul Jan Doloiras and Salvador Depante.
Meanwhile, La Salle lost MVP Jacqueline Alarca and Stephanie Mercado to graduation, but retained Finals MVP Charleen Cruz, Rookie of the Year Mikaela Esperanza, and Best Blocker Michelle Gumabao.
Sunday's other games will feature Ateneo against University of the East in the first game of the men's division, and Far Eastern University vs University of the East in the women's division.
The UAAP Season 74 volleyball season will formally open on Saturday, November 26. In the men's division, Far Eastern U takes on De La Salle in the first game, while Adamson U battles National U in the second game.
In the women's division, National U goes up against University of the Philippines in the opening game, followed by the game between University of Sto. Tomas and the Ateneo de Manila University.
