MANILA, Philippines – The Azkals’ goalkeeping chores will likely fall on Eduard Sacapano’s shoulders if keepers Neil Etheridge and Ronald Mueller remain unavailable for the 2012 Suzuki Cup.
But Philippine team coach Hans Michael Weiss is confident that the 32-year-old Army man from Negros Occidental can handle the job.
Weiss said in a recent interview with ANC’s Hardball that they are still waiting word from Etheridge’s mother club Fulham FC if the Filipino-British will be allowed to participate in the Cup.
If Etheridge doesn’t get his release, “Sacapano will play the same role that he did in the previous friendly against Singapore,” said Weiss.
The German coach said Sacapano has shown vast improvement after undergoing heavy training in the past year.
Sacapano was instrumental in the Azkals’ successes in recent competitions and friendly games.
His penalty save against Chinese Taipei helped the Azkals win the Paulino Alcantara Peace Cup last September.
Sacapano also gave out a stunning performance in the Philippines’ friendly against Singapore with key saves, giving the Azkals a 1-0 win versus the visiting Lions.
“He is strong in training right now,” said Weiss. “He has our full confidence.”
