MANILA, Philippines – Brazilian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Thiago Silva is facing a six-month suspension after testing positive for marijuana metabolites.
Silva was tested positive following his third-round submission win against Stanislav Nedkov in Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on Fuel TV in Macau.
According to Zuffa, the parent entity of UFC, Silva has agreed to undergo drug rehabilitation aside from serving his suspension.
"Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again," said Zuffa in a statement.
This is Silva’s second suspension in the last two years.
The 6-foot-1 ju-jitsu black belter was suspended for a year after being caught tampering his urine sample following his win against Brandon Vera in 2011.
