MANILA, Philippines – Undefeated Filipino lightweight Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta plans to win every round when he challenges Mexico’s Miguel Vazquez for the IBF lightweight championship on December 8 in Las Vegas.
Speaking with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing, Gesta’s manager Vince Parra unveiled their gameplan for Vazquez.
“We plan on fighting for three minutes of every round. We’re obviously looking for a knockout, but that’s not first and foremost,” Parra said. “Just to win every round and dominate the fight and leave no questions to the judges, if it makes it that far.”
But Parra said they will definitely go for the knockout if the opportunity presents itself.
“If we see the opportunity then, at every opportunity we will pounce,” Parra said.
Gesta has previously said that he knows he will have to bring the fight to Vazquez as the Mexican “always runs” during fights.
Meanwhile, Gesta’s father, Aniceto, is very happy with how his son’s training camp has progressed.
“Training is coming along great. He’s responding to the challenge... I couldn’t be happier,” Aniceto said. “His weight is great, his endurance is great, he had great sparring partners and we couldn’t ask for better conditioning.”
It will be Gesta’s first shot at a championship. The fight will be held in the undercard of the fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
