Gamboa faces Filipino boxer in Pacquiao undercard
MANILA, Philippines -- Another Filipino boxer will see action in the undercard of the December 8 pay-per-view bout between rivals Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
According to reports from RingTV and ESPN, Filipino super featherweight Michael Farenas will fight unbeaten Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa in the undercard.
Aside from Pacquiao and Farenas, undefeated lightweight Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta, who hails from Cebu, will fight in the undercard against Mexico's Miguel Vazquez.
"It's going to be a great night for the Filipino boxing fans, not only with Pacquiao, but now, with Gesta and Farenas," Top Rank boss Bob Arum said in the RingTV report.
ESPN's Dan Rafael reported that no titles will be disputed in the fight. It will be Gamboa's first fight at super featherweight.
Farenas got the call to face Gamboa after the Cuban's original opponent, Miguel Beltran Jr., lost to Roman Martinez last September 15.
"Once Miguel Beltran fell out, the quest for an opponent began and the fact (Farenas) was already on the card and he's a Filipino brought some natural cache to it," said Top Rank vice-president Carl Moretti in the ESPN report.
Gamboa is a former featherweight champion with a 21-0 record. He has not fought in over a year after a contractual dispute with Top Rank and is now being handled by rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's SMS Promotions.
Farenas, meanwhile has a record of 34 wins with three losses and four draws. His last bout, against Japan's Takashi Uchiyama, was a technical draw.
