Coffee Mixers burn Energy Cola
MANILA, Philippines – San Mig Coffee stretched its winning run to 5 games by manhandling Barako Bull, 93-73, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Friday.
Amid a slow start, the Coffee Mixers banked on their defense to limit the Energy Cola’s scoring output below 80 points.
“In the first half, we didn’t like the way we started. We just picked up our energy in the second half,” San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone said in PBA.ph.
James Yap paced the Coffee Mixers with 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. His team mate PJ Simon added 20.
Ronald Tubid gave Barako Bull its last hold on the lead, 57-56, through free throw shots midway in the third canto.
San Mig Coffee then began tightening its defense while uncorking a 13-0 run in the last 4 minutes of the quarter.
In the final period, the Coffee Mixers again held Barako Bull scoreless in the last 4 minutes as Yap inflicted damage on the offensive end.
Yap sparked a 14-0 blitz that hiked San Mig Coffee’s lead to 20, 83-63, still 5:32 left in the game.
Cone said the win has given the Coffee Mixers a winning mindset before they go up against defending champion Talk ‘N Text on Wednesday.
“It’s hard to face Talk ‘N Text coming off a loss, so we played with a sense of urgency and tried to pick up a win,” he said.
Tubid was Barako Bull’s top scorer with 17 points. Leo Najorda also chipped in 10 for the Energy Cola’s losing effort.
It was Barako Bull’s first game under new head coach Bong Ramos.
