MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine chess team added 2 silvers medals and a bronze medal to country’s tally in the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Palembang, Indonesia.
Filipino Grandmaster (GM) John Paul Gomez defeated Malaysian International (IM) Master Jimmy Liew in the 8th round, then subdued Indon IM Tirta Chandra Purnama in the final round to create a 2-way tie for first place with eventual winner Viet GM Le Quang Liem in the Blindfold Chess event.
Le beat fellow 7-pointer Gomez in tie break points to capture the coveted gold medal.
Another Filipino entry, GM Darwin Laylo, took the bronze medal.
Vietnam, led by GM Dao Thien Hai (2505) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Nguyen Thi Thanh An, are now virtual champions in the Mixed pair chess competition with one round to go.
The Filipino tandem of newly-minted GM Oliver Barbosa and Woman International master (WIM) Catherine Perena will settle for silver.
Asia's first GM, Eugene Torre, is the head coach assisted by former Olympian National Master (NM) Cesar Caturla.
