MANILA, Philippines - The members of Juan Manuel Marquez's camp are very disappointed with their fighter's controversial loss against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao last Saturday evening in Las Vegas (Sunday morning in Manila).

In the third meeting between the two boxers, Marquez once again came up short, losing a majority decision to Pacquiao.

But it was a controversial result since many boxing analysts and fans believe Marquez had done enough to win the fight.

Marquez's manager, Fernando Beltran, says the controversial decision will hurt the sport of boxing anew. He specified the scorecard of judge Glen Trowbridge, who had Pacquiao winning the fight by 4 points, 116-112.

"By four points, 116 and 112, it hurts the sport of boxing very much because, I don't think it was by four points. I think it was very close," Beltran said. "I think they should fire these judges. I think the judges were very partial and this really hurt the sport."

Mexican boxer Omar Chavez supports his compatriot, saying Marquez deserved the victory.

"A good fight, but I think Marquez won. Styles make fights, and Marquez is the perfect fighter for Pacquiao," Chavez said.

Even retired NBA player Jalen Rose, who had predicted a victory for Pacquiao prior to the fight, was not convinced with the results.

"I look at the fight two ways. I come from a school of, you have to do more to be a champ, but I'm just scoring it. I feel like Marquez probably had the edge on points," Rose said.

James Smith of In This Corner also gave Marquez the victory.

"He was the guy with better defense. He frustrated Manny Pacquiao. I thought I have him winning by 2 or 3 points," he said.

But Michael Koncz, Pacquiao's adviser, says a Pacquiao-Marquez fight will always be controversial.

"We can have this fight 10 times, and I think it's gonna end up in controversy every time, because of Manny and Marquez's styles. That's what it's all about," he said.

Because there was still no definitive winner in the fight, Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum has proposed a 4th installment to the series.

It remains to be seen, however, if Team Marquez will agree to another fight against Pacquiao, since Marquez said after the bout that he is mulling retirement. -- Report from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN News North America
