MANILA, Philippines – The uncles of American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. see no reason for the pound-for-pound king to even consider a bout against former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa.
The idea of a bout between Mayweather and Gamboa was brought up by rapper-promoter Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson on Twitter, wherein he claimed that the unbeaten Cuban had what it takes to defeat Mayweather.
But two of Mayweather’s uncles, Jeff and Roger, told Examiner that a fight against Gamboa was pointless.
“The whole boxing world knows that Gamboa ain’t got a chance against Floyd,” Jeff said. “This guy gets dropped by a 126-pounder (featherweight), what’s he going to do with Floyd? And that’s the truth.”
Roger, who also trains Mayweather, said that even Gamboa knows he cannot beat the American.
“What the (expletive) is Gamboa going to do with Floyd?” Roger questioned. “Listen, that’s just talk. If (Gamboa) thought he could whoop Floyd, he’d have said it himself.”
“He ain’t no fool. I know he ain’t no fool,” Roger said of Gamboa.
The Cuban fighter is undefeated with a 21-0 record, but he has been inactive since September 2011. Gamboa won a gold medal for Cuba in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as a flyweight.
