MANILA, Philippines – Retired basketball player Alex Compton has not received an offer from the Ateneo de Manila University to be the next head coach of the five-time UAAP champion Blue Eagles, according to a report from Inbound Pass.
“I have not received an offer from Ateneo and thus cannot comment on the situation,” Compton told the popular basketball website.
A report from the Philippine Star Wednesday revealed that Compton is being eyed as the next head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
“Alex is seriously being considered,” according to Ateneo’s Ricky Palou.
Aside from Compton, current assistant coaches Sandy Arespacochaga and Jamike Jarin are also being eyed as candidates to replace the position vacated by multi-titled mentor Norman Black.
But Compton told Inbound Pass that he was “surprised” to hear the news.
“I was surprised, but there’s no offer,” he said.
Compton played in the now defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association and the Philippine Baskebtall League.
The Ateneo Blue Eagles won their fifth straight UAAP title last October, beating the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers in two highly charged games.
