MANILA, Philippines – Filipino contender Drian “Gintong Kamao” Francisco has been offered the chance to face World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux this December.
Rich Mazon of PhilBoxing cited a source who said Francisco has been asked by Zanfer Promotions if he is "interested" to fight Rigondeaux on December 15.
In a separate PhilBoxing report, Ronnie Nathanielsz cited Francisco’s manager, Elmer Anuran, who said they were “very much willing to take the offer.” [http://philboxing.com/news/story-76774.html
“Drian and his coach, Justin Fortune, confirmed the acceptance yesterday,” Anuran said.
If the fight pushes through, it will take place in the undercard of the super bantamweight fight between Nonito “The Filipino” Flash Donaire and Jorge Arce.
Francisco is currently training in Los Angeles and was originally supposed to fight on the undercard of the flyweight fight between Brian Viloria and Hernan “Tyson” Marquez.
Rigondeaux will be a step-up in competition for Francisco, as the Cuban boxer is currently undefeated and is considered as one of the top super-bantamweights in the world.
“We’re mindful that Rigo is a great fighter, the defending champion, a two-time Olympic gold medalist,” Anuran told Nathanielsz.
“But we also give Drian high credit and trust that he can surely deliver a good fight, and God willing, could pull off a big upset,” he added.
