Filipino standout "King" Arthur Villanueva suffered a heartbreaking loss when he was stopped by Luis Nery in a non-title bout at the Gasmart Stadium in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Villanueva, a rising star of ALA Promotions, actually scored a knock down against Nery in the fourth round, but was unable to sustain his charge.
Nery, the WBC bantamweight champion, returned the favor by punishing Villanueva in the fifth round. The referee stopped the fight at the 1:19 mark of the sixth round with Villanueva no longer able to fight back.
Afterward, the Filipino boxer acknowledged that he was beaten fair and square.
"Congrats to Luis Nery, you are the better man tonight," Villanueva said in a Facebook post.
It marked the first time in his career that Villanueva has been stopped. His record drops to 31-3, while Nery improved his spotless slate to 25-0.
