MANILA – Champion teams and top-caliber athletes from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) stamped their class in the 14th University Games (UniGames) held in Iloilo City last October 24 to 31.

The UAAP accounted for 11 of the National Capital Region’s 20 titles, with University of Santo Tomas (UST) leading the charge, ruling men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s football, and women’s athletics.

Reining UAAP champion UST trounced University of San Jose-Recoletos of Cebu, 25-14, 25-12, 23-25, 25-21, in the men’s finals while its female counterparts essayed a 25-11, 25-23, 25-18 drubbing of league rivals De La Salle University to conquer the distaff side.

In women’s athletics, UST scooped 15 gold medals, highlighted by a track double from Serenata Salmon who aced the 800m and 3,000m runs.

Perennial UAAP athletics champion Far Eastern University (FEU) finished second with 11 gold medals while Ateneo de Manila University bagged 3 gold medals.

The UST Lady Booters, meanwhile, nipped La Salle, 1-0, to raise their second UniGames football trophy in 3 years.

Back-to-back UAAP champions Ateneo annexed the men’s basketball crown, whipping St. Francis of Assisi College, 75-66, while Adamson University squeaked past UAAP stablemate FEU) 79-77, to cop the women’s diadem.

Making ripples

Adamson also made ripples in its other bread-and-butter sport, mounting a 3-0 shutout of Rizal Technological University (RTU) to gain the women’s softball title while UST wound up third.

University of the East (UE), for its part, snared the men’s badminton plum over the Iloilo Doctors’ College.

FEU, meantime, scored title feats in women’s chess and men’s table tennis.

The Morayta-based female woodpushers chalked up a tournament-best 15.5 points ahead of eventual second-placer La Salle, which tallied 13 points. FEU finished third in the men’s category with 13 points.

The FEU male paddlers outfoxed second and third placers San Beda College and CSB on the table courts while their ladies’ squad finished bridesmaids to the Lady Blazers.

Swimming sweep

Newly-minted UAAP pool champs University of the Philippines (UP) rode on the exploits of Carla Grabador and Claire Adorna to fuel State U’s amazing sweep in women’s swimming.

Grabador plucked 6 gold medals hinged on 4 individual and 2 relay titles, while Adorna reaped 3 gold medals alongside 2 relay victories for UP, which ended a 10-year championship drought in UAAP swimming this season.

The victory offset the Maroons’ third-place finish in the men’s division behind RTU and CSB.

La Salle took runner-up honors in men’s and women’s lawn tennis dominated by CSB. UP settled for third in the men’s bracket. – by Anthony Divinagracia
