MANILA, Philippines – Stephan Bonnar has retired from mixed martial arts (MMA) after losing in his cage war with pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva.

Bonnar, who is best known for his violent Octagon battle against Forrest Griffin in 2005, has decided to call it quits after 23 MMA fights.

“Huge thanks to every UFC fan out there! All I ever wanted was to bring ya'll some fun...hope u were entertained. Peace, love, & violence!” Bonnar said in his official Facebook page following his loss to Silva in UFC 153.

Despite lacking in the technical aspect of fighting, his all-out brawling style has made him a fan favorite.

His landmark fight against Griffin was credited for saving a cash-strapped UFC in 2005.

Although he lost the action-packed 3-round fight, the bout helped UFC gain mainstream appeal.

Bonnar compiled a total of 15 wins and 8 losses in his 11-year MMA career.
