MANILA, Philippines – The International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title fight between champion Miguel Vazquez of Mexico and Mercito Gesta of the Philippines is almost a done deal, according to a PhilBoxing report.
Rich Mazon reported that Gesta will challenge Vazquez for the world title in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight card on December 8 in Las Vegas.
It will be Gesta’s first time to fight for a world championship.
“It’s almost a hundred percent already. We got Vazquez, Top Rank confirmed it last night,” a source with knowledge of the situation told Mazon.
Top Rank chief executive Bob Arum confirmed to Boxing Scene’s Ronnie Nathanielsz that Gesta will face Vazquez on the undercard.
Vazquez recently defended his belt against top contender Marvin Quintero last Saturday, winning via split decision.
Meanwhile, Gesta’s last fight came in August, when he knocked out American boxer Ty Barnett in the ninth round of their fight at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas.
His trainer, Vince Parra, told Nathanielsz that Gesta is “ready to go.”
“(Gesta) is coming along great and is ready to pull the trigger and be taken off the leash,” Parra said.
Gesta is set to begin training at the Big Bear camp in California this November.
