MANILA, Philippines – Unbeaten Filipino lightweight Mercito Gesta will get the chance to spar against Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto, according to an online report.
Sources cited by Philboxing’s Rich Mazon said that Gesta, who is being set to challenge lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez, will train alongside the Puerto Rican in Big Bear in California.
“Miguel Cotto is in Big Bear too. His team asked for Mercito to spar with him in preparation versus Austin Trout," said one of the sources.
Top Rank plans to include the Gesta-Vazquez bout in the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight card on December 8.
Final details of the fight are now being ironed out before Top Rank Inc. makes its formal announcement.
"We got Vazquez, Top Rank confirmed it last night," said the source privy to the negotiations.
"Mercito is so excited, this is the break that he has been waiting for," he added.
Vazquez, who recently outpointed Marvin Quintero, currently owns the International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title.
Gesta, meanwhile, is coming off a 9th-round technical knockout win against Ty Barnett.
